Inside cement kilns, high temperatures, extended residence time, and turbulence completely destroy waste materials. The mineral component of the waste replaces primary mineral inputs (clay, iron, limestone), while the combustible part provides energy for clinker production. The result is complete recycling and recovery with no residual remnants. ## The Waste Hierarchy The hierarchy (avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, dispose) is the guiding principle. The fourth R — Recover — is less known but just as important. By following the hierarchy, businesses can reduce environmental impact, lower greenhouse-gas emissions, and save energy. ## Scale Partner facilities reduce emissions by over 20 million tons by avoiding methane from decomposing landfill waste, offsetting fossil-fuel electrical production, and recovering metals for recycling. ## Context Over 250 million tons of trash are buried in U.S. landfills each year — enough to bury 16,000 football fields 10 feet deep. The average person disposes of 4.5 pounds of waste daily. Wider adoption of the waste hierarchy could reduce greenhouse gases by a gigaton — equivalent to closing 1,000 large coal-fired power plants. --- # Super Sacks, Gaylord Boxes & Baling Wire URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/specialty-recycling-services/super-sacks iSustain supplies end-to-end recycling packaging and processing materials including super sacks, Gaylord boxes, baling wire, and bale ties. ## Gaylord Boxes - **Plant Gaylords.** Full bottom, triple wall. Approximately 350,000 cigarette butts have been recycled into items like plastic outdoor furniture. ## Program Components **PET Bottle Baling.** iSustain helped Dollywood source a specialized PET bottle baler that bales discarded beverage bottles into 700 lb cubes ready for sale to recyclers achieving 100% recycling of polypropylene caps and PET bottles. **Recycling Bins.** Dollywood's Coca-Cola partnership provided new plastic recycling bins at convenient guest locations. A Dollywood host sorts through bottles to remove foreign objects. **Logistics.** iSustain coordinates shipping and sale of cardboard and plastics on Dollywood's behalf to maximize recycling rates and market value. Several shipments have gone to Dalton, Georgia, for PET recovery into carpeting. Revenue from cardboard and plastic sales is donated to Share-it-Forward, a program that helps Dollywood employees during times of need. **Other Waste.** Dollywood's household garbage and waste is sent to Sevier Solid Waste Inc. (SSWI) in Pigeon Forge, where organic waste from Sevier County is composted at the facility — over 50,000 tons of compost produced each year. ## Operational Results When iSustain's bottle-bundling program started, it took 31 days to produce the first bundle. With increased recycling cans and strategic placement, that has dropped to about 10 days. Key stakeholders include: - Bobby Johnson, Dollywood Grounds Manager. - Mark Huber, Vice President of Business Development, iSustain. - Pete Lucic, Director of Strategic Partnerships & On-Premise, Coca-Cola North America. --- # Case Study: PureCycle Recycled Resin Supply URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/case-study/recycled-resin-supply iSustain supplies PureCycle Technologies with up to ten million pounds of plastic feedstock, primarily post-consumer polypropylene plastic waste, which PureCycle converts into high-quality recycled polypropylene. ## PureCycle's Recycling Process PureCycle uses a patented solvent-based purification technology to remove color, odor, and other contaminants from recycled plastic. The result is a clear, odorless, high-quality resin (ultra-pure recycled, or UPR) suitable for a wide range of applications. The process can recycle colored plastics without sacrificing end-product quality and is designed for polypropylene (No. 5) plastic waste. ## Environmental Context Approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the world's oceans each year. By 2050, projections suggest more plastic in the ocean than fish. PureCycle's process and advanced recycling broadly have potential to reduce this leakage. ## Quotes Dustin Olson, PureCycle CEO: "This agreement is evidence of a great partnership that continues to flourish... With iSustain's expansive network, we can use our patented recycling technology to grow beyond curbside materials and also achieve circularity with other polypropylene waste materials." Mark Huber, iSustain VP of Business Development: "PureCycle is a game-changing solution for polypropylene plastic waste. Their technology is creating new recycling markets for previously unrecyclable plastic waste." --- # Case Study: Sigma Stretch Film Plastic Film Recycling URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/case-study/plastic-film-recycling Sigma Stretch Film has partnered with iSustain Recycling to provide plastic film recycling and waste diversion solutions to Sigma's entire customer base. The partnership is structured around the circular-economy framework: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials at their highest value, and regenerate nature. The partnership replaces the linear take-make-dispose system with a closed-loop model where used stretch film and other paper and plastic waste from Sigma's customers is collected, recycled, and returned to the supply chain. --- # Case Study: City Brewing — Brewery Waste Management URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/case-study/brewery-waste-management City Brewing, a world-class bottling and canning operation, was experiencing rapid growth (including hard seltzer production) and corresponding waste-cost escalation when iSustain stepped in. ## Starting Conditions - $70,000-$80,000 per month in waste disposal under contract with a major U.S. waste-management provider. - 500 tons of garbage per month, 95% hauled directly to landfills. - Overcharging on service and disposal, multiple account numbers for the same location, billing confusion, excessive equipment, frequent price increases. ## iSustain's Interventions - **Dumpster dives, operational-process reviews, and invoice audits** to establish a baseline cost per ton. - **Aluminum can crusher and baler.** Removed liquid from cans and baled them to "mill quality" material for direct sale, replacing 90+ open-top bins of full cans going to landfill. Added value: $400,000+ per year. - **Vendor administration.** iSustain became City Brewery's representative to manage the prior waste vendor's contract, correcting equipment, service levels, and billing. - **High-density balers.** Installed for case and stretch film. iSustain trained staff and rehabilitated existing balers via skilled baler technicians. - **Sweed chopper installation.** Multiple Model 450 choppers densified excessive green PET banding, eliminating floor safety hazards and making the material recyclable. ## Results - Monthly waste-management spend: $80K → $25K (approximately 70% reduction). - Cost per ton: $93 → $37. - Landfill diversion improved by 60%. --- # Case Study: Zebra Technologies — Label Trimmings to AEF URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/case-study/zebra-technologies Zebra Technologies' Flowery Branch facility produces labels — a manufacturing process that generates label trimmings as a byproduct. Because the trimmings contain fiber, plastics, adhesives, and coatings, they cannot be processed through conventional recycling. ## iSustain's Solution iSustain developed a waste-to-fuel strategy that converts the label trimmings into Alternative Engineered Fuel (AEF). AEF is an engineered fuel pellet created by compressing non-recyclable materials into a high-energy alternative fuel. AEF pellets deliver energy output on par with fossil fuels and are used in industrial energy systems, replacing coal and natural gas. ## Implementation Steps 1. **Optimized waste collection.** Upgraded the facility's pneumatic collection system with advanced screening and filtration. 2. **Compaction.** Installed a horizontal baler to compress waste into transport-ready bales. 3. **Conversion.** Baled material is delivered to iSustain's renewable-energy partners and processed into AEF pellets for industrial heating and power generation. ## Results - 95% of label waste at Flowery Branch is now diverted from landfill. - AEF produced helps generate clean energy, reducing reliance on virgin fossil fuels. - The model is scalable across other Zebra facilities. --- # Case Study: Wine Industry Stretch Film — North Bay Zero Waste Collective URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/case-study/Stretch-film In California's Napa and Sonoma wine country, used stretch film had no scalable recovery pathway. Wineries individually didn't generate enough volume to justify private pickup, and municipal recycling wasn't designed to handle thin films. The material was routinely landfilled despite high reuse potential. ## The Collective Following a breakout session at RISE Napa, a grassroots group of industry professionals — eventually formalized as the North Bay Zero Waste Collective (NBZWC) — formed to solve the problem. St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery (Napa Green Certified) joined with regional leaders, partnering with iSustain and Sigma Stretch Film to build a stretch film recycling system. ## The Closed Loop Stretch film generated across 100+ wineries and businesses is collected, recycled, and remanufactured into new film using Sigma's Sustain360 circular solution. Because Sigma manufactures Sustain360 domestically in North America, recovered material can return to the same producer — a closed loop only achievable without offshore manufacturing. ## How the Process Works 1. **Collection.** Conservation Corps North Bay provides free pickup from participating wineries, or wineries can drop off at Wine Service Co-op locations in St. Helena and Napa. 2. **Aggregation and Baling.** Wine Service Co-op aggregates, bales, and stores material until full truckloads accumulate. 3. **Processing and Conversion.** iSustain manages end-to-end logistics. Long-term partner Polyfit converts post-consumer stretch film into high-performance recycled pellets suitable for machine stretch film applications, with strict specification control, full traceability, and compliance reporting. 4. **Manufacturing.** Sigma Stretch Film incorporates the recycled resin into new Sustain360 film containing 30% post-consumer recycled content. ## Measurable Impact - **St. Supéry:** Reduced stretch film usage through improved efficiency. Diverted 5,200 pounds in year one. - **NBZWC:** 100+ participating wineries and businesses. Projected 20-30 truckloads of stretch film collected annually across Napa and Sonoma. Approximately 40,000 pounds of film diverted per full truckload. ## Why Stretch Film Remains the Sustainable Choice Stretch film offers significantly less material per pallet than corrugate stabilization, shrink bundling, or reusable strapping. Strong load containment per pound of material. Lower manufacturing energy than heat-intensive shrink systems. Smaller carbon footprint due to reduced resin usage, lighter freight weight, and efficient recovery. High-volume domestic recoverability supports a true closed-loop system. ## Key Stakeholders - Brooke Shenk, Winemaker at St. Supéry and Co-Chair of NBZWC. - Megan Hernandez, Co-Chair of NBZWC. - Joe Graves, President of Sigma Stretch Film. - Mark Huber, President of Business Development, iSustain. --- # Sustainability Initiative: Tennessee Aquarium Partnership URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/sustainability-initiatives/tennessee-aquarium-partnership iSustain maintains a long-standing partnership with the Tennessee Aquarium dedicated to keeping plastics out of streams, rivers, and oceans. The Aquarium's mission to connect people with nature and inspire informed decisions about water and wildlife aligns with iSustain's commitment. ## Microplastics Research A study by Dr. Andreas Fath of Furtwangen University found surface water in the Tennessee River contains microplastic concentrations 80 times higher than Germany's Rhine River. Through collaboration with Dr. Fath and others, the Aquarium investigates: - Sources of microplastics - Microplastic distribution throughout the water column - Potential impacts of microplastics on freshwater aquatic organisms ## iSustain's Commitment Ongoing financial support to the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute (TNACI) in the fight against microplastics. Most microplastic research has historically focused on marine environments, making freshwater research particularly important. Quote from Dawn Huber, iSustain Founder: "We are proud to support the Tennessee Aquarium and its freshwater microplastic research and programs. The health of our watershed goes far beyond the Tennessee Valley." --- # Sustainability Initiative: Tennessee River Cleanup URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/sustainability-initiatives/tennessee-river-cleanup iSustain is a sponsor of the annual Tennessee River cleanup hosted by Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful (KTNRB), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the first-ever Keep America Beautiful affiliate dedicated solely to river preservation. ## Impact - KTNRB has removed over 100,000 pounds of trash from the watershed to date. - iSustain-sponsored cleanup events have resulted in 19,901 pounds of trash removed from the Tennessee River in the past three years. ## Recognition Kathleen Gibi, Executive Director of KTNRB, has called iSustain "river champions." Mark Huber, iSustain VP of Business Development, also serves as KTNRB Board President. --- # Sustainability Initiative: UT Knoxville Sustainability Endowment URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/sustainability-initiatives/sustainability-education-endowment iSustain established a first-of-its-kind sustainability education endowment totaling $400,000 at the Haslam College of Business, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. iSustain committed $200,000, matched through a Haslam College program. ## Purpose and Structure The endowment generates interest, with a portion awarded annually to a deserving Haslam graduate student. Expected annual scholarship: approximately $18,000. This is the first scholarship within the Haslam College of Business — undergraduate or graduate — that gives preference to students passionate about and engaged in sustainability. ## Stakeholders - Dr. Stephen Mangum, Dean of the Haslam College of Business. - Paul Clark, Senior Director of Development at the Haslam College of Business. - Mark Huber, iSustain VP of Business Development and UT Knoxville Class of 1997 alumnus. --- # Contact URL: https://isustainrecycling.com/custom-recycling-consultation Phone: (423) 668-0111 Email: info@isustainrecycling.com Online: https://form.jotform.com/231285579795070 iSustain is happy to discuss your waste-stream challenges, recycling rate improvements, equipment selection, and logistics cost reduction. --- # Social Media - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/isustainrecycling/ - Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/isustaininc - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/isustain-inc/ --- *This file is maintained by iSustain Recycling.
